St. Isaac's Cathedral, St. Petersburg

Peter the Great was born on May 30, 1672 in the day Isaac of Dalmatia, a Byzantine monk. May 30, 1710 the emperor ordered his people to build the St. Isaac's wooden church near the Admiralty. The order was executed. The church was built on the shore of the Neva. In Feb. 19, 1712. Peter the Great and his wife Catherine were married in the church.

The existing  St. Isaac's Cathedral was built in the period from 1818to 1858. This project was led by the French architect Auguste de Montferrand. The temple stands on 10,762 piles, the height of the cathedral is 333 feet, the area is 0.99 acre, the temple can accommodate up to 12000 people. The interior has numerous paintings, mosaics, sculptures, various kinds of precious stones and gilding. Of particular interest is one of Russia's largest stained glass windows, an area of 307 Sq ft. Many outstanding artists, among them - Bryullov, Klodt, Pimenov and others completed the interior wall paintings.
Currently, the colonnade of St. Isaac's Cathedral is one of the most attractive places for tourists. Here, from a height of 141ft you can see a panorama of Saint Petersburg.
