In 1716 the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm I presented the Amber Room
During the World War II, the Amber Room could not be taken to another place because of the fragility of the parts. Germany, occupied the outskirts of Leningrad, looted the Catherine Palace and the end of 1941 have taken the Amber Room to the capital of the former East Prussia - Koenigsberg.
Abducted amber panels and doors were installed in one of the halls of Königsberg Castle. The room was in the royal palace until the spring of 1944. During the retreat of German troops, it was taken away in an unknown direction. Since then, traces have been lost.
The search for the Amber Room was started as soon as the Soviet Army took Konigsberg. They continued for many years, but the room was not found. The story of her disappearance and the search - one of the most fascinating and mysterious things of XX century.
In late 1970, the Council of Ministers of Russia ordered to rebuild the Amber Room.
Two fragments returned to Russia. They were found in Germany - Florentine mosaic and amber chest. In 1997, German authorities have confiscated this mosaic from a person, which he recieved from German officer who participated in the removal of the Amber Room from Russia. Location of all the things that were in the Amber Room remains unknown.
Today a copy of the Amber Room, in its natural size, is now included in the Catherine Palace near St. Petersburg.
