North of Nevsky Prospect one can see the upper Griboedov canal, where the eye-catching colorful dance of the top of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, often called "Savior of Blood". It shows bright multi-colored decorations and their ancient Russian forms of sharp and unexpected contrast to the surrounding classic architecture. The church rises to a height of 81 meters. It can hold 1600 people.
Church of the Savior of the Blood was built in 1883-1907, on the place where on March 1, 1881 Tsar-Liberator Alexander II was mortally wounded.
The building is the largest monument of Russian mosaic art. Bright composition of a mosaic created in the workshop of Alexander and Vladimir Frolov which almost compeltely covers everything on the inside.
The cathedral has numerous decorations filled with mosaic inserts, belts, tiles and colored tiles.
March 1, 1881 a bomb thrown by Ignatius Grinevitsky, turned the wheel of history in Russia.
