The history of Peterhof (also known as Petrodvorets) tied for first place with Peter the Great, who in 1714 planned to build on the site front-town residence, which would have exceeded the luxury of the French Versailles. The emperor himself took an active part in the design and construction of the palaces of Peterhof.

Through active participation in the project of the Emperor, Peter the Great's work on the new residence had been held with incredible speed. By 1723 the planning was done, The Lower Park was build, Sea Canal was dug, a number of the fountains were decorated in the Upper Park, Montplaisir and Marly were build. The Gala of the residence was opened in the same year.

The main decoration of Peterhof are the hundreds of fountains different in appearance and design that create a great ensemble. Notable among these is the Grand Cascade, designed by Peter the Great. The most colorful symbol of Russian victory over Sweden is the Samson Fountain with a statue of the biblical hero, tearing jaws of a lion.

Magnificent parks, numerous fountains, gilded and marble statues, the magnificent furniture of the palaces of Peterhof - everything had to demonstrate the richness and glory of Russia.

The Second World War had done some severe damage to Petrodvorets. The occupation of the city lasted for almost three years, during which time the Germans blew up and burned down: the Grand Palace, and inflicted a heavy toll on the Great Cascade, Cascade Gold Mountain, the Chess Mountain, they destroyed the underground waterways, parks mined and cut down a lot of fountains including the "Samson". Fortunately, restoration work began immediately after the war, and today we have the opportunity to admire the unique beauty of the palace and park ensemble of St. Petersburg.
